The Magic of Puglia: Italy’s Once-Hidden Paradise
June 2, 2026

For years, travelers flocked to Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast while southern Italy’s Puglia region quietly remained one of the country’s best-kept secrets. However, once regarded as a hidden gem, Puglia has now become one of Europe’s fastest-growing travel destinations, introducing more than 16 million annual visitors to its breathtaking coastlines, historic villages, extraordinary cuisine, and authentic Italian charm.

Located in the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia offers tourists a completely different experience — one that feels slower, more relaxed, and deeply rooted in tradition. Stretching along both the Adriatic and Ionian seas, it provides access to cliffs, turquoise waters, hidden beaches, and picturesque seaside towns such as Otranto, Locorotondo, and Alberobello, which have become some of the region’s most searched and photographed destinations. Otranto captivates with its crystal-clear coastline and historic seaside charm, while Locorotondo enchants visitors with its whitewashed streets. Alberobello, arguably Puglia’s most iconic destination, is famous for its historic trulli — cone-roofed stone huts that create one of the most unique landscapes in all of Italy. Together, these towns perfectly encapsulate a sense of timeless beauty seldom found elsewhere.

Food is also at the heart of the Puglian experience. The region produces nearly 40% of Italy’s olive oil and is celebrated for its unforgettable cuisine: handmade orecchiette pasta, fresh seafood, local wines, creamy burrata cheese, and long leisurely meals, all integral to daily life. Even as Puglia grows in popularity, it preserves these unique, yet almost unanimously enjoyed, culinary staples. While some of these favorite food items are freshest in summer, a time that tends to be particularly crowded, many visitors also choose to experience the region during the quieter off-season or before peak travel months arrive.

This was just the objective with our “The Magic of Puglia 2026” travel program back in April, which showcased the very best of the area at a less busy moment through a carefully curated journey filled with culture, food, wine, and unforgettable scenery. The trip began with a magical welcome dinner before guests explored the breathtaking coastline of Polignano al Mare. Travelers wandered through the charming streets of Ostuni, enjoyed a seaside lunch in Savelletri, and experienced the artistic and architectural treasures of Lecce, including a hands-on cooking class where they learned how to make traditional orecchiette pasta.

The adventure continued through the spectacular Salento region with visits to Otranto, Gallipoli, and Santa Maria di Leuca, often called the Finnibus Terrae (“End of the Earth”) for being where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. Guests also enjoyed a winery tour and wine pairing experience at the renowned Gianfranco Fino Winery before concluding the journey in ancient Matera, famous for its extraordinary cave dwellings and atmosphere.

While our time in Puglia may have concluded for now, we are thrilled to be returning to the region next year for our 2027 “The Magic of Puglia” program! Guests will once again experience the beauty, history, and culinary treasures of southern Italy while staying at two luxurious five-star properties: the elegant Patria Palace Hotel and the iconic Borgo Egnazia. From Lecce and Alberobello to Polignano al Mare, Ostuni, and Matera, our itinerary promises an unforgettable exploration of one of Italy’s most cherished destinations.
