Typical of the Tuscan town of Lucca, Buccellato is a traditional sweet bread made with raisins and anise seed. It usually has a ring shape and is coated with eggs and sugar to give a shiny exterior. The Lucchesi (i.e. “people from Lucca”) say “Chi viene a Lucca e non mangia il buccellato è come non ci fosse maistato!” (“Anyone who comes to Lucca and doesn’t eat buccellato is as if they were never here!”) Buon appetito!
