Basilica of San Petronio (Bologna)

The Basilica of San Petronio is the largest church in Bologna, Italy, and is dedicated to the city’s patron saint. Construction on the church began in 1390 and the façade remains largely unfinished. The basilica’s most important work of art is the sculptural decoration of the main doorway which was executed by the Sienese sculptor Jacopo della Quercia in 1425. These marble reliefs would greatly influence Michelangelo’s frescoes on the Sistine Ceiling nearly a century later. Buona visita!
