Often described as the most beautiful piazza in all of Italy, the Piazza del Campo in Siena is the perfect architectural stage for medieval Sienese political life. Paved almost entirely in brick (the most common building material in Siena) and divided into nine triangular sections to reflect the power of Siena’s ruling “Council of the Nine,” the sloping piazza draws the visitor to its most important building – the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena’s city hall. The piazza is best known today as the improvised racetrack where the Palio horse race takes place twice each year. Buon visita!
