Baptistery, Siena

The Gothic style baptistry in Siena was built behind and below Siena Cathedral in 1319 to permit the Cathedral to enlarge in response to Florence’s claim that it was going to build the biggest Cathedral in all of Tuscany. While not as prominent as the baptistries in Pisa or Florence, Siena Baptistry is full of extraordinary art treasures, including bronze relief panels by Donatello, Ghiberti and della Quercia. Buona visita!
