The “Triumph of Fame” is a commemorative birth tray (desco da parto) painted on both sides and created to celebrate the birth of Lorenzo “il Magnifico” de’ Medici in 1449. On the front, knights extend their hands in allegiance to an allegorical figure of Fame, which holds a sword and winged cupid. The back instead depicts the personal device of the Medici family – a diamond ring with three ostrich feathers and a scroll with the motto “semper” (“always”) written on it. It was painted by Lo Scheggia (Giovanni di ser Giovanni Guidi), the younger brother of Masaccio, and was kept in Lorenzo’s private quarters in the Medici Palace.
