Although he died in Rome, the nearly-89-year-old Michelangelo was buried in a tomb in the great Franciscan Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, Italy. Taking 14 years to complete (1564-1578), the tomb monument was designed by Giorgio Vasari and celebrates the genius of the divine artist. Three female allegorical figures represent to the arts of “Painting,” “Sculpture,” and “Architecture” and express how Michelangelo transcended all three to become history’s first “Artist.” Buona visione!
