"The Ascension" by Donatello

Located in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, “The Ascension with Christ Giving the Keys to St. Peter” (which is the full technical name of the sculpture) is arguably Donatello’s finest example of “relievo schiacciato” (“squashed relief”).  Carved around 1430, the relief unusually combines two subjects as Christ hands the keys to the kingdom to Peter as he himself ascends into heaven. Buona visione!
