St. John the Evangelist by Donatello

Carved in 1409 for the original late 13th-century façade of Florence Cathedral, Donatello’s “St. John the Evangelist” is a powerful representation of one of Christianity’s key figures.  The figure is seated with a book on his left leg and twisting towards his right in a contrapposto pose that allows the head of the statue to be visible to spectators below. Donatello’s statue would serve as inspiration for Michelangelo’s later and better-known “Moses.” Buon visione!
