“Portinari Altarpiece”, Hugo van der Goes, Uffizi

The “Portinari Altarpiece” is a wooden triptych painted by the Flemish artist Hugo van der Goes around 1475 located in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, Italy. It was originally commissioned by Tommaso Portinari for the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova which had been founded by his ancestor Folco Portinari. Tommaso had spent many years in Bruges and wanted to bring a Flemish masterpiece to Florence. The painting depicts the “Adoration of the Shepherds” with extraordinary realism and symbolism and was imitated by many Florentine artists. Buona visione!
