"Marzocco Lion" Donatello

Donatello’s “Marzocco” was carved in 1419 to adorn the apartment of Pope Martin V in the convent of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy. It depicts a lion resting its paw upon a shield decorated with the heraldic image of the commune of Florence and is a symbol of Florentine sovereignty. The statue was placed in front of Palazzo Vecchio in 1812 but was later moved into the Bargello Museum where it can still be found today. Buona visione!
