Painted in 1426, when Masaccio was only 25 years old, the “Madonna and Child” was the main panel of a large and now largely lost altarpiece in the Pisan church of Santa Maria del Carmine. The voluminous sculptural forms of Mary and Baby Jesus, achieved through a sophisticated use of chiaroscuro, reflect the naturalist trends of the early Renaissance, as does the convincing three-dimensional space that the figures and throne occupy.
