Duccio’s “Last Supper” is one of the 26 paintings recounting the Passion of Christ on the back side of the celebrated “Maestà” altarpiece (1308-1311) in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Siena. It is unique in that it is very difficult to identify Judas, who is usually depicted sitting alone in front of the table, without a halo, and dipping bread into a bowl of wine with Jesus. In Duccio’s version, Judas is one of five figures in front of the table, without a halo, and holding either bread or wine. In fact, the only way to identify Judas is to look at the next scene in which he is shown accepting the 30 pieces of silver. Buona visione!
