"Hercules and Deianira" Pollaiuolo

Located in the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT, the “Hercules and Deianira” was painted by Antonio del Pollaiuolo around 1470. It is one of the first examples of mythological subject matter in Renaissance art, and depicts the moment when Hercules rescues his wife Deianira by shooting the centaur Nessus who is trying to steal her away. As the YUAG rightfully claims, “This portrayal of the legend, one of the most famous Renaissance paintings in any American collection.”  While Pollaiuolo is not a household name, he was a revolutionary artist and one of the first to celebrate nudity and classical themes in his art. Buona visione!
