"A Regatta on the Grand Canal" by Canaletto
Painted in 1740 and located in the National Gallery of London, the painting depicts an annual event staged during Carnival in Venice since the 14th century. The one-oared gondola race on the Grand Canal would draw the entire city. Canaletto captures the excitement of the event using the animated crowds and boats who look on in anticipation. Buona visione!
