Salt Pans of Trapani

Dating back to the 13th century, the salt pans of Trapani create one of Sicily’s most beautiful landscapes. Part of a natural reserve, these coastal wetlands not only produce organic salt that is still worked and harvested entirely by hand but also provide a shelter for many migratory birds. The pans are characterized by various pools, piles of salt, and some of Europe’s old star windmills that were used to move water between pools and to grind salt. Buona visita!
