Quattro Canti (Palermo)

Officially named the “Piazza Vigliena,” the Quattro Canti is a spectacular Baroque square in Palermo, Sicily. It marks the intersection of two major streets – the Via Maqueda and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele – and the four ancient quarters (“canti”) of the city. The square is octagonal in plan, with four sides consisting of streets and the remaining four of dramatic concave Baroque-style facades.  Each façade is four stories high and organized with a fountain dedicated to a season on the ground level, statues of the Spanish rulers of the city on the next, statues of the city’s four female patron saints on the third, and finally the coats of arms of the rulers at the very top. Buona visita!
