Duomo of Siena

One of Italy’s most successful Gothic-style cathedrals, the Duomo of Siena was built to reflect the city’s extraordinary devotion to the Virgin Mary. Begun in 1226, the cathedral underwent various phases of construction and enlargement until its completion 1380s. While the original architect is unknown, the façade of the cathedral was designed by the great Giovanni Pisano. Within its spectacular and richly decorated interior, the Duomo of Siena houses masterpieces by Donatello, Nicola Pisano, Pinturicchio, Raphael, and even Michelangelo! Buona visita!
