Literally translated as “holy field,” the Camposanto of Pisa is a cemetery whose central courtyard contains dirt allegedly brought to Pisa from the Holy Land. The beautiful marble structure is part of the Pisa Cathedral Complex and was built in 1278. Decorated with celebrated fresco cycles including the “Triumph of Death,” and other by Taddeo Gaddi and Benozzo Gozzoli, the Camposanto is also home to one of Italy’s most important collections of ancient Roman sarcophagi. Buona visita!
