Located in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Siena, this magnificent relief sculpture was once located above the “Door of Forgiveness” (Porta del Perdono) on the south side of Siena Cathedral. While not universally accepted as a Donatello, it is clearly linked to Donatello’s revolutionary interpretation of the “Madonna and Child” subject. Set in a complex perspectival space, the sweetly melancholic face of the Virgin suggests her prescience of the tragic fate of her child who tenderly places his hand upon his mother’s neck. Buona visione!
