Painted by the sex-craved-priest-painter Fra Lippo Lippi around 1450, the “Madonna, Child and Two Angels” is one of the most beautiful paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Lippi creates an illusionistic frame within a frame and sets the group of figures against a rocky landscape. Arguably the first Italian painter with a true sensibility for feminine beauty, Lippi’s Madonna is simply sublime and contrasts strikingly with the mischievous “Three Stooges” on the right-hand side of the painting. Buona visione!
