"Hercules" by Piero della Francesca (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum)

Piero della Francesca’s detached fresco of “Hercules” is the artist’s only known painting of a secular subject and is currently located in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, MA. It was originally located in the artist’s family home in San Sepolcro in Tuscany, and depicts a nude mythological hero wrapped in a lion skin holding a club. As is typical of Piero’s paintings, clear light washes over the figure eliminating all shadows, but not compromising the sculptural volume of the figure. Buona visione!
