The Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce, Italy, is one of the most celebrated examples of the Leccese Baroque – the unique architectural style that developed in Lecce in the 17th century. A richly decorated façade prepares the visitor for an explosion of decorative motifs on the interior of nearly every column, altar and arch. The splendid carvings are all made from the local soft limestone, known as “Pietra Leccese” (“Lecce stone”), which is nicknamed the “poor man’s marble.” Buona visione!
