Eckstein’s “Painted Glories” discusses the frescoes inside of the Brancacci Chapel in Florence, Italy – a premier masterwork of the Italian Renaissance – in the context of 15th-century Florence. Eckstein examines the 1440 Florentine victory over Milanese forces, the nature of the Carmelite order in Florence, and the state of 15th-century Florentine society, culture, and politics to illuminate why the frescoes inside the Brancacci Chapel were commissioned and painted.
