EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “The Search for the Lost Leonardo”
Presented by Art Historian Maurizio Seracini
With Additional Commentary by Dr. Rocky Ruggiero
The Battle of Anghiari, also known as The Fight for the Standard is a mural painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505 in the Sala del Gran Consiglio of Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio, commemorating a Florentine victory over the Milanese on the plains of Anghiari, a battle that took place on June 29, 1440. This extraordinary mural disappeared during Giorgio Vasari’s renovation of the Sala Grande in 1563.
Could Vasari have covered up or destroyed Leonardo’s masterpiece?
In 1975, a scientific investigation began to look for the lost mural. The last renewed effort took place in 2011-2012 by a team of young scientists from UCSD led by Prof. Maurizio Seracini. Unfortunately, the research came to an abrupt stop due to alleged accusation of damaging the Vasari’s murals in order to find the Leonardo’s mural.
This webinar will give a full account of the research from the mid 1970s to 2012 and will show how the original location of the Battle of Anghiari was indeed identified, together with a reconstruction of how the Sala Grande was built and later modified by Vasari. We shall also discuss the particular painting technique employed by Leonardo and the problems that it incurred.
Finally, a detailed account will be given about the results of the few hectic days of research in 2012 and what could and should be done to give a final answer to one of the greatest art historical mysteries of all time – is Leonardo’s masterpiece still buried behind Vasari’s mural in the Hall of the 500?
