EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Art, Architecture, and the Advent of Modern Engineering”
Presented by Wayne Kalayjian
Join structural engineer Wayne Kalayjian, author of Saving Michelangelo’s Dome, for a fascinating discussion on Renaissance art, Enlightenment thinking, and the birth of modern engineering practice.
In 1742, when the legendary dome atop St. Peter’s Basilica—designed by artist and architect Michelangelo—cracks and threatens to collapse, its fate is left in the hands of Pope Benedict XIV and three mathematicians. How did their revolutionary (and controversial) use of science and mathematics lead to the birth of engineering as we practice it now? What were their pioneering ideas? How has the profession of engineering shaped our modern society?
As part of the story, we will discover and discuss some the great cultural movements of our times: the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution; along with the key personalities of their day—some famous, others little-known—like Michelangelo, Domenico Fontana, Pope Benedict XIV, Galileo, Isaac Newton, and Robert Hooke.
EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Siena: Picturing Civic History”
Presented by Dr. John Paoletti
Siena’s greatest impact on the history of art occurred in the 13th through the 15th centuries. During this time the city’s painting, sculpture and architecture constantly reinforced ideas of history as a determinant for the future, of religion – places, ceremonies, institutions, saintly figures – as a sign of civic safety, and of repetitions of established images as permanent and proven urban security. We will discuss how within an enclosed urban space imagery in multiple media – by artists such as Duccio, Simone Martini, Jacopo della Quercia, Francesco di Giorgio and the emerging Michelangelo – fostered not only civic pride but also broadcast Siena’s international reputation as one of Europe’s most vital urban centers.
EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Redefining the Renaissance: Pontormo and the Capponi Altarpiece in Florence”
Presented by Dr. Rocky Ruggiero
In 1525, the extraordinary Mannerist painter Jacopo Pontormo was commissioned to decorate the Capponi Chapel in Santa Felicita in Florence. Pontormo painted the dome and its surrounding pendentives, a side wall fresco of the “Annunciation” and an altarpiece whose beauty is beyond discussion, but whose subject matter has eluded art historians for centuries. Once described as “a bouquet of sorrow,” the painting seems to intentionally defy normal iconographic parameters. Join Dr. Rocky for this exclusive webinar where he will examine the controversy surrounding this sublime painting and attempt to answer some of the open questions concerning it.
