Built between 1473 and 1481 for Pope Sixtus IV (from whom the chapel takes its name), the Sistine Chapel is best known today for Michelangelo’s famous 16th-century ceiling and “Last Judgment” frescoes. There are also side wall frescoes in the chapel by Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Rosselli, and Signorelli. Beyond its artistic importance, the Sistine Chapel also serves as the site of papal conclaves when new popes are elected. Buona visita!
