Although not in Italy, the National Gallery in London contains the most important collection of Italian Renaissance art outside Italy. Founded more than two centuries ago, the National Gallery in London houses some 2,300 paintings from the 13th century to 1900. Its Italian painting collection includes some of history’s most iconic works of Renaissance art including Leonardo da Vinci’s “Virgin of the Rocks”, Michelangelo’s two early unfinished easel paintings “The Manchester Madonna” and the “Lamentation,” Titian’s “Bacchus and Ariadne” and two “Poesie” Artemisia Gentileschi’s self-portrait as “St. Catherine of Alexandria,” and Caravaggio’s spectacular “Supper at Emmaus.” Buona visita!
