Essentially encompassing the area of Florence around the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the neighborhood of San Lorenzo is Medici country! Not only are all but two Medici men buried inside Brunelleschi’s great Renaissance Basilica (which is the first ever Renaissance style church) but the Medici Palace is also located just across the street. Both monuments are a must for anyone visiting Florence and looking to learn about the “First family of the Renaissance!” Today the neighborhood is also home to one of Italy’s largest markets. While meat and produce can be purchased in the “Mercato Centrale,” leather goods, souvenirs and clothing can be purchased in any of the numerous outdoor stalls. Buona visita!
