Located in the province of Prato, Tuscany – just a few miles from Florence – the town of Poggio a Caiano is best known for its Medici Villa. Begun in 1485 by the celebrated Renaissance architect Giuliano da Sangallo for Lorenzo “il Magnifico” de’ Medici, the villa is square in plan with a central courtyard. While some of the original 15th century art and architecture remain, much of the villa was completed and decorated by Lorenzo’s son Giovanni (Pope Leo X), and then later used by the Medici Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Buona visita!
