Palazzo Barberini

In 1627, Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini) hired Carlo Maderno to design his new family palace in Rome. After Maderno’s death, the project continued under Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The palace has a unique “H” shaped design, with dueling staircases by Bernini and Borromini on either end. Today the palace is the “National Gallery of Ancient Art” and contains masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, and Holbein. Buona visita!
