Home to many works of art that were intended for or removed from the nearby cathedral of Siena, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (or “Cathedral Museum”) is one of the most spectacular museums in Italy. With works such as Duccio’s “Maestà” – the largest Italian altarpiece ever painted – Donatello’s “Madonna del Perdono,” numerous cathedral façade sculptures by Giovanni Pisano, and a magnificent stained-class window designed by Duccio, the MOD is simply fantastic. Visitors can also climb to the top of the “Facciatone” and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Buona visita!
