Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, Florence

Built in the middle of the 16th Century, the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo (Loggia of the New Market) was initially intended for the sale of silk. Today, instead, the structure is occupied mainly by mobile stands selling leather goods and souvenirs which set up and clear out daily. But the main attraction of the Loggia is the Fontana del Porcellino (“Fountain of the Piglet”) which is actually a wild boar. Tradition maintains that rubbing the wild boar’s nose and then placing a coin in its mouth will bring good luck if the coin falls through the grate. In bocca al lupo and Buona Visita!
