Basilica of St. Mark, Venice

Built in the 11th Century, the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice is Italy’s most unique church. An example of Italo-Byzantine architecture, the church was built primarily to house the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, whose body had been stolen from Alexandria, and to serve as the private chapel of the Doge. The result was a stunning and eclectic mix of styles and materials. Buona visita!
