Bardi Chapel by Giotto

The frescoes in the Bardi Chapel were painted after 1317 by Giotto for the fabulously wealthy banker Ridolfo de’ Bardi. They depict six scenes from the life of St. Francis of Assisi inside the chapel, and a seventh – the most important in the life of the saint, “St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata” – above the entrance arch, outside of the chapel. Painted when Giotto was at the height of his artistic powers, the frescoes demonstrate the painter’s mastery over naturalism, three-dimensionality, drama, and movement. Buona visita!
