Located in the beautiful 15^th-century Piccolomini Palace, the State Archives of Siena, Italy, are a treasure trove of historical information. Its earliest document dates to the 8^th century CE, and you can also find the earliest documented mention of the Palio horse race, which dates to 1239. Several of the Archives’ rooms are dedicated the beautifully illustrated “Bicchierna” covers. Artists as illustrious as Ambrogio Lorenzetti illustrated the covers of these financial records. The Archives are also often home to exhibitions which showcase parts of its extraordinary collection. Buona visita!
