Archivio di Stato, Siena (The State Archives of Siena)

Located in the beautiful 15th-century Piccolomini Palace, the State Archives of Siena, Italy, are a treasure trove of historical information. Its earliest document dates to the 8th century CE, and you can also find the earliest documented mention of the Palio horse race, which dates to 1239. Several of the Archives’ rooms are dedicated the beautifully illustrated “Bicchierna” covers. Artists as illustrious as Ambrogio Lorenzetti illustrated the covers of these financial records. The Archives are also often home to exhibitions which showcase parts of its extraordinary collection. Buona visita!
