Abbey of San Benedetto, Subiaco
The Abbey of San Benedetto is located in the town of Subiaco in the north of the Italian region of Lazio. It was originally built in the 6th century directly onto the cliffs of Mt. Taleo, on the spot of the cave – “Sacro Speco” – where St. Benedict lived as a hermit for three years. Most of the current structure was built in the 11th century and it contains the earliest known portrait of St. Francis of Assisi, dated around 1223, when the saint was still alive. Buona visita!
