Tintoretto’s "Last Supper", San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice
Tintoretto’s “Last Supper” was painted late in the artist’s career in 1592 and is in the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy. Tintoretto arranges the table of the “Last Supper” on a steep diagonal that pulls the viewer into the painting. He also employs theatrical lighting produced by the ceiling lamp and Christ’s halo to illuminate an otherwise dark space. Prominence is given to the servers who surround the table, as well as the angels who hover above the scene. Judas is easily recognizable as the sole figure on the front side of the table dressed in orange. Buona visione!
