Part of a series of frescoes illustrating the “Life of the Virgin Mary” in the Chiostrino dei Voti in
the Basilica of Santissima Annunziata in Florence, Italy, “The Visitation” is an early work by the
Mannerist painter Jacopo Pontormo. It shows the meeting of the Virgin Mary and St. Elizabeth,
both with child, inside a classicized niche. The low staircase and affected poses of the figures
resemble Raphael’s “School of Athens” in the Vatican. Buona visione!
