"The Story of Lucretia" by Botticelli

Located in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, “The Story of Lucretia” was painted by Alessandro Botticelli around 1500. Its position in the museum accurately reflects its function as a Renaissance “spalliera” or painting hung at shoulder height. The painting illustrates the tragic story of the virtuous Roman woman Lucretia whose death caused the founding of the Roman Republic. Buona visione!
