While the Renaissance painter Pinturicchio, who was a student of Perugino and a contemporary of Raphael, is not a household name in the US, his work is much revered in Europe. One of Pinturicchio’s absolute masterpieces is his “Resurrection” in the Hall of Mysteries in the Borgia Apartment in the Vatican Museums. In the painting, Christ rises triumphantly from his tomb surrounded by a “mandorla” (almond-shaped full-body halo) of golden light. In the lower left of the fresco, Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) is dressed in full papal regalia and portrayed as a witness to the event, with the papal tiara resting next to him on the ground. Buona visione!
