"The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Margaret" by Filippino Lippi

“The Holy Family with St. John the Baptist and St. Margaret” was painted by the Florentine painter Filippino Lippi for the powerful Cardinal Oliviero Carafa while Filippino was in Rome painting the Carafa Chapel for the same patron between 1488-1493. It was painted in the “tondo” (round) format, which most likely means it was intended for a domestic setting. Five brightly colored figures fill the foreground space with Mary and Margaret supporting young Jesus and John the Baptist, as Joseph looks on. Buona visione!
