"The Four Evangelists” by Peter Paul Rubens (at the Ringling)

Currently located in the John and Mable Ringling Art Museum in Sarasota, FL, “The Four Evangelists” was painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1625. The painting depicts the four Evangelists – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – and their respective symbols – an angel, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. Rubens employs a theatrical composition by framing the scene and making it seem as if the four figures, whose positions alternate, are moving across stage from left to right. He also imbues the figures with his typical dynamic energy. Buona visione!
