Painted by Masaccio in 1425 on one of the entrance pilasters of the Brancacci Chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, Italy, “The Expulsion” is one of the most moving and powerful paintings in the history of art. Adam is so overwhelmed by his grief that he forgets his nudity and covers his sobbing face. Eve’s face is transformed into a mask of horror that weirdly evokes Munch’s “Scream.” All of this as Masaccio introduces a new language of monumentality, expression, and naturalism to Renaissance painting. Buona visione!
