Painted in 1521 by the Florentine artist Giovanni Battista di Jacopo – better known as “Rosso Fiorentino” due to his flaming head of red hair – the “Deposition” is generally considered to be his masterpiece. The painting was originally located in the Duomo of Volterra but is housed today in the city’s Communal Painting Gallery (Pinacoteca Comunale). A confusing, complicated, yet moving interpretation of the subject, Rosso Fiorentino’s “Deposition” is a celebrated example of Mannerist painting. Buona visione!
