Lorenzo Ghiberti’s “Competition Panel” was commissioned in 1401 as part of the competition for the contract for a set of bronze doors for Florence Baptistry. It is made of gilded bronze and depicts the Old Testament story of the “Sacrifice of Isaac.” Ghiberti deservedly won the competition by elegantly depicting the moment just before the angel interrupted the slaying of Isaac, employing elegant curves, gestures, and drapery throughout the composition. Buona visione!
