“St. George” by Donatello (Bargello)

Carved for the Sword and Armor Guild of Florence in 1415, Donatello’s marble “St. George” is today located in the Bargello Museum. It depicts the holy knight in armor, originally holding a drawn bronze sword and wearing a bronze helmet (now lost). The statue is the first to depict a subject in a clear narrative moment – just before St. George fights the dragon. Donatello’s “St. George” would also greatly influence Michelangelo’s later statue of “David.” Buona visione!
