"Self-portrait” by Raphael

Painted around 1504, when Raphael was only 21 years old, this “Self-portrait” is in the Uffizi Galleries of Florence. The unfinished painting – particularly in the unpainted collar and edges of the hair – depicts Raphael in his work clothes. The dark robe and cap, later known as the “raffaella,” were those worn by painters in the 16th century. While the calm expression of the face is similar to Raphael’s later self-portrait in the “School of Athens.” Buona visione!
