The Salus Popoli Romani (“Salvific Health of the Roman people”) is the name of one of Rome’s most important paintings. The Byzantine icon depicts the Virgin and Child and arrived in Rome from Crete in the 6th century CE. It is quite large for an icon, measuring 5 x 3.25 feet (117 × 79 cm), and has been venerated by many popes throughout history, including Pope Francis who had the painting restored in 2018. Buona visione!
